A nervous dog collar typically comes in bright colours with big, capitalised letters indicating that the dog wearing it requires space.
The idea is simple – it’s to let other people know ahead of time that it’s best if they don’t approach. Or, if they must, approach slowly without bothering your dog.
Everyone who owns a nervous dog knows how stressful daily walks can be. We’re constantly on the lookout for other people and dogs, trying to keep a safe distance to avoid unnecessary stress for all parties involved.
I asked around and learned that experiences with nervous dog collars can be a bit hit and miss. It seems that they do help a lot of the time, but unfortunately not all the time.
I’ve been told that on a fair few occasions, rather than keeping a distance, other people would think of it as “cute” that the dog was labelled as nervous. They then took it as an invitation to be “extra kind” to the dog, wanting to comfort them, which can frighten an anxious dog even more.
So, to summarise, dog collars for nervous dogs can certainly help a lot of the time, but us nervous dog owners will still need to continue to be extra careful, as there’s no guarantee that the odd person won’t misinterpret the message. After all, it’s understandably hard to relate to the challenges of having a nervous dog if you’ve never had one yourself.
