Here’s the truth about indestructible dog beds: they don’t exist. Everything can be destroyed if your dog really sets their heart to it.
But there are real differences in the durability of dog beds depending on the materials and techniques used. Tough fabrics like canvas or ballistic fabric are a great starting point. There are also things you can do to help reduce the risk of your dog chewing on things they shouldn’t.
What Is the Most Durable Material for a Dog Bed?
If you’re looking for a bed that will outlast most options on the market, a canvas bed is a good place to start.
We have a Carhartt dog bed (yes, they make dog products now!) and are really happy with it. It’s made from the same durable duck canvas material used for Carhartt jackets. The only minor complaint is that it’s constantly coated in dog hair if you don’t clean it regularly — but that’s the nature of the material, which also makes it durable and more scratch-resistant. Worth knowing before you buy.

Elevated Dog Beds with a Metal Frame
An elevated bed with a metal frame can be a good option too — the frame is much harder for a dog to chew through. They’re also a popular choice for place training, so this style of bed can come in handy for training purposes further down the track. And they make fantastic camping beds because they’re easy to clean. In general they work well outdoors, as many dogs enjoy the airflow they get from sleeping elevated off the ground.

What to Keep in Mind If Your Dog Is a Power-Chewer
💡 Tips for Power-Chewers
- Don’t leave your dog unsupervised until you can trust them not to chew on anything that’s off-limits — for their safety as much as your furniture’s.
- Take preventative measures: keep certain items always out of reach, and provide appropriate outlets like long-lasting chew treats to redirect the urge.
- Stop unwanted behaviours early. When it comes to chewing, it’s important to prevent the habit before it becomes established.
- Get professional help if needed. A qualified dog trainer can identify the root cause of your dog’s chewing and provide personalised advice. If you’re not sure where to find one, ask your local vet for a recommendation.
