5 Adelaide Dog Beaches Worth Adding to Your Weekend Plans

Adelaide does dog beaches very well. Whether your dog is the type to launch straight into the water, spend an hour investigating one suspicious patch of seaweed, or sprint in circles for no obvious reason, there’s a stretch of coast ready for them.

We’ve picked five dog-friendly beaches south of Adelaide that work for everything from an easy local outing to a full coastal day trip.

A quick note before you grab the lead: dog access can apply only to designated sections, and temporary restrictions may be introduced around wildlife protection areas. Always check the signs when you arrive.

The dog beaches worth your weekend

The best beach is not necessarily the biggest or most famous one. It is the place where your dog can stay relaxed, responsive and under control while everyone enjoys the coast. If your dog is still working on recall or finds open beaches overwhelming, you might prefer one of the fully fenced dog parks featured in our Adelaide guide. Here’s how each of these five beaches actually plays out.

O’Sullivan Beach

CITY OF ONKAPARINGA

For the dog who came to run. Some dogs arrive at the beach with a clear agenda: hit the sand, find a friend and burn through every ounce of available energy. O’Sullivan Beach has a designated off-leash section and is one of several permanent dog-exercise areas along the City of Onkaparinga coastline, a solid choice for a straightforward beach outing without having to plan around the usual daylight-saving leash hours.

There’s also a section of the Coast Park Trail running from O’Sullivan Beach towards Christies Beach, so you can stretch the outing into a longer coastal walk when your dog somehow still has energy left.

Good for: energetic dogs, regular beach walks and uncomplicated off-leash time.

Port Noarlunga South

CITY OF ONKAPARINGA

For dogs who prefer a proper adventure. Port Noarlunga South works well when standing in one spot throwing a ball fifty times is not your idea of a good morning. The area includes designated off-leash beach access and connects with a four-kilometre section of the Coast Park Trail towards Moana, passing coastal reserves, parking areas, toilets, picnic shelters and playgrounds, with views stretching along Gulf St Vincent.

That makes it easy to combine some beach time with a longer walk, a picnic or a slow wander along the coast. Just make sure you’re at Port Noarlunga South specifically, access rules aren’t necessarily the same around the main Port Noarlunga foreshore and jetty.

Good for: longer outings, coastal walks and dogs who get bored easily.

Seaford and Moana

CITY OF ONKAPARINGA

For the dog with energy to spare. The Seaford and Moana coastline is another designated off-leash area and a strong option when your dog needs more than a quick twenty-minute sniff around the block. The surrounding coast gives you room to keep moving, while the Coast Park Trail between Port Noarlunga South and Moana adds an easy-to-moderate walking route if you want to turn the beach visit into proper exercise.

Moana is also one of the local beaches where vehicles can access designated sections. The beach speed limit is 10 kilometres per hour, but you’ll still need to stay alert and keep your dog close near vehicle access areas.

Good for: long walks, high-energy dogs and people who like their beach trips to count as exercise.

Aldinga Beach

CITY OF ONKAPARINGA

For making a whole day of it. Aldinga Beach is the one to choose when a quick dog walk has somehow evolved into snacks, towels, beach bags and a full-day itinerary. It includes a designated off-leash dog area and sits along one of the most striking parts of Adelaide’s southern coastline, with the Coast Park Trail connecting Maslin Beach and Aldinga Beach past clifftop and coastal scenery.

Vehicles are allowed on designated parts of Aldinga Beach between 5.30am and 11.59pm, though the section south of the Aldinga Beach access ramp closes to vehicles from 1 May to 30 September. The beach speed limit is 10 kilometres per hour. It’s a brilliant coastal outing, but not somewhere to stop paying attention while your dog disappears over the horizon.

Good for: confident beach dogs, southern day trips and humans who pack enough supplies for a minor expedition.

Sellicks Beach

CITY OF ONKAPARINGA

For a proper escape from the city. Sellicks Beach is one of the furthest options south and feels more like a destination than a quick suburban dog walk. It has a designated off-leash section, dramatic coastal surroundings and a one-kilometre section of the Coast Park Trail nearby.

Vehicles are also permitted on designated parts of Sellicks Beach, so keep your dog responsive and watch for cars moving along the hard sand. The area is also important habitat for Hooded Plovers, temporary signs may require dogs to be leashed within 100 metres of a marked breeding site, even where broader off-leash rules normally apply.

Good for: scenic weekend drives, longer beach days and dogs who enjoy having space to explore.

A few things worth knowing before you go

💡 Before You Head Down

  • Across other City of Onkaparinga beaches, dogs generally need to remain on-leash between 10am and 8pm during daylight saving. The designated areas covered above have different arrangements, but signs at the beach should always be treated as the final word.
  • Bring fresh water, a bowl, waste bags, a towel and a lead, even at an off-leash beach.
  • Keep dogs away from nesting birds and unfamiliar marine life, and discourage them from drinking seawater, which can quickly lead to an upset stomach and a very unpleasant end to the day.
