O’Sullivan Beach has a designated off-leash section and is one of several permanent dog-exercise areas along the City of Onkaparinga coastline, a solid choice for a straightforward beach outing without having to plan around the usual daylight-saving leash hours.

There’s also a section of the Coast Park Trail running from O’Sullivan Beach towards Christies Beach, so you can stretch the outing into a longer coastal walk when your dog somehow still has energy left.

Good for: energetic dogs, regular beach walks and uncomplicated off-leash time.

For dogs who prefer a proper adventure. Port Noarlunga South works well when standing in one spot throwing a ball fifty times is not your idea of a good morning. The area includes designated off-leash beach access and connects with a four-kilometre section of the Coast Park Trail towards Moana, passing coastal reserves, parking areas, toilets, picnic shelters and playgrounds, with views stretching along Gulf St Vincent.

That makes it easy to combine some beach time with a longer walk, a picnic or a slow wander along the coast. Just make sure you’re at Port Noarlunga South specifically, access rules aren’t necessarily the same around the main Port Noarlunga foreshore and jetty.

For the dog with energy to spare. The Seaford and Moana coastline is another designated off-leash area and a strong option when your dog needs more than a quick twenty-minute sniff around the block. The surrounding coast gives you room to keep moving, while the Coast Park Trail between Port Noarlunga South and Moana adds an easy-to-moderate walking route if you want to turn the beach visit into proper exercise.

Moana is also one of the local beaches where vehicles can access designated sections. The beach speed limit is 10 kilometres per hour, but you’ll still need to stay alert and keep your dog close near vehicle access areas.

Good for: long walks, high-energy dogs and people who like their beach trips to count as exercise.

For making a whole day of it. Aldinga Beach is the one to choose when a quick dog walk has somehow evolved into snacks, towels, beach bags and a full-day itinerary. It includes a designated off-leash dog area and sits along one of the most striking parts of Adelaide’s southern coastline, with the Coast Park Trail connecting Maslin Beach and Aldinga Beach past clifftop and coastal scenery.

Vehicles are allowed on designated parts of Aldinga Beach between 5.30am and 11.59pm, though the section south of the Aldinga Beach access ramp closes to vehicles from 1 May to 30 September. The beach speed limit is 10 kilometres per hour. It’s a brilliant coastal outing, but not somewhere to stop paying attention while your dog disappears over the horizon.

Good for: confident beach dogs, southern day trips and humans who pack enough supplies for a minor expedition.

For a proper escape from the city. Sellicks Beach is one of the furthest options south and feels more like a destination than a quick suburban dog walk. It has a designated off-leash section, dramatic coastal surroundings and a one-kilometre section of the Coast Park Trail nearby.

Vehicles are also permitted on designated parts of Sellicks Beach, so keep your dog responsive and watch for cars moving along the hard sand. The area is also important habitat for Hooded Plovers, temporary signs may require dogs to be leashed within 100 metres of a marked breeding site, even where broader off-leash rules normally apply.

Good for: scenic weekend drives, longer beach days and dogs who enjoy having space to explore.
