About Pugs
🐾 A Brief History of the Pug
Pugs are one of the most recognised dog breeds in the world, known for their distinctive flat faces and friendly, bright temperament. The breed’s origin is believed to date back more than 2,000 years to the Chinese Empire, where they were developed as an imperial dog and kept exclusively by the emperor. Dogs not suitable for breeding were eventually sold at high prices, and over time the pug became popular across all levels of society worldwide.
Through generations of selective breeding, pugs were bred to achieve the flat-faced look they have today. Unfortunately, modern pugs often suffer from breathing difficulties (a condition called Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome) due to their shortened snouts, and they have a tendency to gain weight easily.
There is currently a breeding movement to return to the original appearance of the breed. Breeders of the so-called ‘retro pug’ specialise in breeding the original, longer-snouted pug with improved health outcomes.
