Here’s the truth about indestructible dog beds: they don’t exist. Everything can be destroyed if your dog really sets their heart to it.

*But* there are differences in the durability of dog beds, depending on the materials and techniques that have been used to make the bed. For example, tough and durable fabrics such as canvas or ballistic fabric can be a great choice.

There are also some things you can try to help reduce the risk of your dog chewing on items that shouldn’t be chewed.

For example, you can learn to redirect the behaviour with the help of a qualified dog trainer. Amongst other things, they might recommend to provide your dog with long-lasting chew treats to give them a different outlet for their urge.

What is the most durable material for a dog bed?

If you’re looking for a bed that will be more durable than most other options on the market, then a canvas bed is a good place to start.

Personally, we have a Carhartt (yes, they make dog products now!) dog bed and are really happy with it. It’s made from the same durable duck canvas material they use for Carhartt jackets.

The only minor complaint that we have is that it’s constantly coated in dog hair if we don’t clean it regularly. But that’s the nature of the material, which also makes it durable and more scratch-resistant. So I guess we can’t *really* complain about it, but it’s something you should be aware of.

Elevated dog beds with a metal frame can be a good option too

Because it will be much harder for a dog to chew the frame open.

They are also a popular type of dog bed for “place training” with dogs, so a bed like this might come in handy for training purposes further down the track too. And they make fantastic camping beds because they’re easy to clean. In general they’re good outdoor beds, because many dogs like the nice breeze they can get from it.

What to keep in mind if your dog is a power-chewer

Don’t leave your dog unsupervised until you can trust them not to chew on anything that’s off-limit. This is not only to protect the items in your house, but also to protect your dog’s well-being.

Take preventative measures against chewing, such as ensuring that certain items are always kept away from your dog.

When it comes to behavioural problems, it’s important to stop and prevent unwanted behaviours before they become a habit.

With that said, if this is something you’re finding really difficult, you’ll probably need the help of a qualified dog trainer. They will understand the root of your dog’s problems and be able to provide you with personalised training advise.

If you’re not sure where to find a good trainer near you, it’s often best to ask your local vet for a recommendation.
