In most parks, that is where the welcome mat gets pulled, no dogs allowed inside at all, camping only. It is one of the more common bait-and-switches in Australian travel, and one that only shows up once you have already driven six hours and unpacked the car.

Ten Caravan Parks Where Your Dog Sleeps Inside Too

From a dog-surfing world champion’s holiday park to a paddock big enough for a proper run, these ten take the “cabin” part of dog-friendly cabin seriously.

For a holiday park actually run by someone who understands dogs. The Summit 1770 was built by Chris de Aboitiz, a former world champion tandem surfer and pioneer of dog surfing, and it shows in the details most parks skip entirely. Each pet-friendly cabin also has its own fully enclosed grassed yard and an enclosed veranda, so your dog has somewhere secure to potter around without you standing over them. The park is an easy walk from the Esperance foreshore and town centre, so it works as a real base rather than just a place to sleep.

For a Sapphire Coast beach holiday that does not stop at the cabin door. NRMA Tathra Beachfront Holiday Park sits directly opposite Tathra Beach, and its pet-friendly cabins and villas let dogs stay inside properly, with selected options opening onto fully enclosed, gated verandahs.

For lakeside walks followed by an actual wander into town. Beechworth Lake Sambell Caravan Park sits beside Lake Sambell and is pet-friendly year-round, with eight designated pet-friendly cabin options for dogs to stay in.

A maximum of two dogs is allowed per cabin booking, and the historic centre of Beechworth is only around a 10 to 15 minute walk away. Between the lake path and the town itself, there is plenty to fill a weekend without spending most of it in the car.

For a Top End trip with a tiny house that is actually called The Doghouse. Litchfield Tourist Park has a dedicated pet-friendly tiny house of that exact name, with a queen bedroom, separate lounge, private bathroom and air conditioning in both rooms, which counts for a lot in the Top End heat.

Outside there is an enclosed verandah with a barbecue and a gated 900mm fence. Dogs cannot enter Litchfield National Park itself, but the park has a handy workaround: staff will check in on pets every few hours while you are out exploring the falls.

Good for: Top End road trips, dogs who would rather have a proper house than a cabin and day trips into the national park without leaving the dog stressed.

For a dog who wants to be off lead around camp without actually being able to leave. Esk Caravan Park has clearly thought through the practical side of travelling with dogs. Its two fully fenced powered sites, 1.2 metre fencing, latched gate and all, give dogs a secure place to move around while you set up, mixing astroturf, pebbles and grass so there is less mud to deal with.

Dogs are also welcome at no extra charge on the standard powered and unpowered sites, and there are designated pet-friendly cabins plus an accessible motel room for travellers without their own setup. For a Mid North Coast stay where the verandah is as secure as the cabin. BIG4 Colonial Holiday Park makes it easy to bring the dog without compromising on the accommodation. Pets are welcome inside selected cabins, and each one has a gated, fully enclosed verandah where dogs can relax outside securely.

There is an on-site dog park for off-leash exercise and a dedicated dog wash, and large dogs are truly welcome here, with no stated size limit and up to two pets allowed depending on the booking. For a Coral Coast stopover where the dog gets its own park too. Discovery Parks Carnarvon gives dogs more than a token patch of grass. Selected cabins and powered sites are pet-friendly, and the park has its own off-leash dog park where pups can properly stretch their legs after a long stretch of highway.

Pet-friendly cabin options are limited, so it is worth calling ahead rather than assuming, but the shaded, grassed powered sites are clearly marked and easier to book. Between the swimming pool, playground and games room for the humans, it makes a handy stopover for anyone exploring WA’s Coral Coast.

Good for: Coral Coast road trips, breaking up a long outback drive and campers more than cabin bookers, given the limited cabin numbers.

For a Limestone Coast base with its own dog day care built in. Pine Country Caravan Park has three dedicated dog-friendly cabins where house-trained dogs can stay inside, each with its own enclosed yard, water bowl and outdoor kennel. There is also a one-acre off-lead dog paddock open dawn to dusk, large enough for a proper run rather than a lap around a tiny pen.

The real point of difference is the secure daytime kennel service, bookable in six-hour shifts for when you want to visit somewhere dogs cannot go, like the region’s caves, national parks or wineries. Dogs need to be comfortable being left alone, and the service is not available during peak periods or extreme weather.

Good for: Mount Gambier and Limestone Coast trips, dog-free day trips to caves or wineries and dogs who would love a big off-lead paddock.
